If you read my last post, you know I’ve been “out of office” while recovering from hip surgery. I am officially one month post-op. I hesitate to share the hard parts because in the grand scheme of things, having surgery with temporary pain/disruption to life pails in comparison to the pain/grief many folks feel on a daily basis. That being said, it is valid pain I have always strived to be as transparent as possible with my students.
So, here’s the good, the bad and the ugly.
The good:
Delivery of coffee and so many baked goods
A fantastic view for the Northern Lights from my recovery spot
Visits from friends/family with no timeline because I had nowhere to be
An abundance of help from people I love
A partner that mades sure I always had warm food and a cold ice pack
Time to finish a few books and shows feeling zero guilt (hello, Love is Blind!)
Skilled surgical and PT team
Important learning experience as a movement teacher
My dogs having a mini vacation at grandma’s house on their favorite couch
Zero pressure from anyone around me to do more than I should (which in our culture is HARD, SO VERY HARD). Any pressure to “do” was 100% on me.
The bad:
Missing walks (AKA my favorite form of self care) especially on really gorgeous Fall days (AKA my favorite season)
Getting completely exhausted from… everything
Slower than expected progress and the comparison game
Financial stress. With subpar insurance and without PTO, taking one month off is not ideal or easy
The ugly:
Being alone A LOT which is not ideal for my mental health
Fear about teaching post surgery (I typically prep my classes by moving though the postures and sequences)
A lot of tears.. especially when you drop your crutch while trying to make food then struggle to pick up said crutch and knock over said food 😂 (I can laugh about it now)
